At the 2025 ALA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, AASL President Becky Calzada had the honor of presenting this year’s Presidential Commendations—recognizing individuals whose advocacy, storytelling and voices have uplifted the essential role of school libraries and librarians across the country.

Among this year’s honorees were the creative team behind the acclaimed, award-winning documentary The Librarians, a film that captures the frontline fight against censorship in schools. The documentary follows the personal and professional journeys of librarians from Texas, Florida, Louisiana, and New Jersey as they face book bans, political pressure, and public scrutiny—all in defense of students’ rights to read freely.

Calzada honored the following filmmakers behind The Librarians were recognized for their remarkable work:

In addition to the film’s creative team, Calzada also recognized Kelly Jensen—author, advocate, and longtime voice at Book Riot—whose passionate writing and tireless advocacy have uplifted the stories of school librarians across the country. Through articles, podcasts, and public engagement, she has become a trusted ally in the movement to protect students’ access to diverse and meaningful books.
