Ever feel like you’re operating on a professional island? You’re not alone.

That’s exactly why the AASL Publications Advisory Group is excited to launch a new community space where conversation takes center stage and school librarians can talk about what actually works in practice.

The Page to Practice Book Club

If you joined us at the Page to Practice Stage during the 2025 AASL National Conference, you know how powerful it can be to talk through ideas with other school librarians. We wanted to keep that energy going and make it easier for people to participate from wherever they call home.

We know how challenging it can be to carve out time for professional learning. That’s why we’re excited to bring the conversation online with a relaxed, asynchronous “slow chat” format hosted on LinkedIn. No deadlines. No pressure to keep pace or read everything at once. Drop in when you can. Share an idea. Respond to a colleague. Take what you need and come back when you’re ready.

Our hope is that the AASL Page to Practice Book Club becomes an easy, welcoming space to connect and grow together.

We’re kicking things off in May, and we’d love to learn alongside you.

Our First Selection

We’re starting with something foundational (pun intended!): Inquire by Lori E. Donovan, the first book in the AASL Shared Foundations Series.

Inquiry is at the heart of school librarianship, shaping how learning communities ask questions, explore ideas, and build understanding. This book helps break that down into practical, usable pieces you can actually try in your library.

As we read together, we’ll focus on how the book’s ideas connect to the Domains and, more importantly, how they show up in real school library settings. No matter what grade levels you serve, you’ll find great ideas to ponder.

Here is our schedule for Inquire (Shared Foundations series):

  • Week 1 (May 4): Introduction & Chapters 1–3
  • Week 2 (May 11): Chapters 4–6
  • Week 3 (May 18): Chapters 7–12
  • Week 4 (May 25): Chapter 13–Conclusion

A Peek Ahead

We’re planning to work our way through the entire Shared Foundation series, among other AASL books. Each two-month cycle will feature a new title and a slow chat, so there’s time to really think it through, try things out, and talk about it.

We’re kicking things off in May with Inquire, and we’ll continue the conversation by naming our next title in June, followed by a slow chat in July. Stay tuned!
