Kathryn Roots Lewis, director of media services and instructional technology for Norman (Okla.) Public Schools, has been elected as the 2018-2019 American Association of School Librarians (AASL) president. Lewis will serve as president-elect during 2017-2018 under AASL President Steven Yates.

Upon learning of her election, Lewis stated: “Thank you for electing me to this position. School librarians across our country make a profound difference in the lives of learners by empowering them to explore ideas, craft compelling questions, find information, inquire, tinker, invent, create new knowledge, think deeply, and read voraciously. These are important times that require us to work together to make school library programs relevant in every learner’s life. Together AASL members must champion our unique skills as collaborators, innovators, co-teachers, technologists, professional developers, and information professionals. I look forward to the exciting times ahead of us! Please join with me to navigate the ever-changing learning landscape and find our place at the helm of learning in effective school library programs. It is an honor and privilege to serve as President-elect of the American Association School Librarians.”

Lewis currently serves on the AASL Board of Directors as the Region 6 Director representing Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Texas. She is also a member of the editorial board responsible for reviewing and remodeling AASL’s new National School Library Standards. Previous AASL leadership positions include chair of the Supervisors Section, chair of the interdivisional task force on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), member of the CCSS task force, and the National School Library Program of the Year and ABC-CLIO Leadership Grant award committees.

At the local level, Lewis currently serves on the boards for the University of Oklahoma School of Library and Information Studies Alumni Association and the Oklahoma Technology Association. Lewis has been an active member of the Oklahoma Library Association serving in several leadership positions including president, chair of the awards and budget committees, and co-chair of the leadership institute and long range planning committees.

Prior to her current position for Norman Public Schools, Lewis served as a classroom teacher and librarian at all levels.
