The 2025 AASL National Conference, taking place October 16–18 in St. Louis, Missouri, promises to be a powerful celebration of the school library community, with a dynamic lineup of keynote speakers who embody the values of inclusion, empathy, and joy. From opening laughs to closing inspiration, this year’s conference is designed to uplift, energize, and affirm the essential role of school librarians.
Opening with Humor and Heart: Steve Hofstetter
Kicking off the conference is comedian, author, and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Steve Hofstetter, whose keynote will blend humor with heartfelt advocacy for school libraries. Hofstetter, known for his books Ginger Kid and Grape Expectations, credits the school library as a formative space in his life: “It’s where I learned my love for the written word, for clever phrasing, and for a good plot twist.”
Conference co-chairs Arlene Laverde, Jennifer Sturge, and Carolyn Vibbert shared their excitement: “Steve’s message of inclusion, resistance, and support resonates deeply with the values of our community. His humor will provide an energizing and inspiring start to the event.”
In a generous show of support, Hofstetter is donating copies of Grape Expectations to attendees, helping spread his message of empathy and resilience to students across the country.
Author Spotlight: Jason Reynolds in Conversation
On Saturday, attendees will hear from Jason Reynolds, the award-winning author and former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. In a conversation with author co-chairs Shannon Gile and Mia Gittlen, Reynolds will discuss the power of storytelling to foster empathy and understanding.
“Jason isn’t just an author—he’s an activist,” said Gittlen. “His raw honesty is critical for learners to know that their stories matter.” Reynolds’s acclaimed works, including Long Way Down, Stamped, and Look Both Ways, have earned him numerous accolades and a devoted readership.
“Jason understands the human experience so deeply,” added Gile. “Getting his books into the hands of learners who need to be seen and heard is powerful.”
Reynolds’s appearance is made possible by Simon & Schuster, a proud supporter of literacy and storytelling for all ages.
A Joyful Farewell: Mychal Threets and The Reading Culture Podcast
The conference will close with a live recording of The Reading Culture Podcast, featuring beloved library advocate Mychal Threets and hosted by Jordan Lloyd Bookey of Beanstack. Known as the “Mr. Rogers of school librarians,” Threets will bring his signature message of joy, mental health, and book love to the stage.
“Joy is not just a feeling—it’s a foundation,” said co-chair Jennifer Sturge. “To close the conference with a message of joy is a wonderful reminder to stay grounded in what matters most.”
Threets’s heartfelt reflections on self-care and community will leave attendees inspired and recharged. “We all believe everyone has the right to read, and the right to see themselves in that book on the library shelf,” he said.
