It’s September and school is in session! The first few busy weeks and busy days are always a blur as we all work to make our libraries ready for students, write our lesson plans as we welcome them in, and assist our colleagues and administration to ready the school to welcome in our school community. September events and programming ALWAYS sneak up on me, no matter how much time I think about it, try to plan for it, and try to work on my ideas. You know why; we are busy! If this describes your experience, then look no further.

As the chair of the School Library Event Promotion Committee, our whole role for this committee is to curate and package resources and ideas for you, the school librarians of our nation. We want to make your life easier and we want to source the best possible resources for you to help inspire amazing programs and lessons for your students and staff for the best learning experience.

If you haven’t heard of the School Library Event Promotion Committee, we are a group of school librarians located all over the country that get together once a month virtually and work on creating what we call Event Pages that then are placed on our web page. To find us, all you need to do is go to ALA.org/AASL, then click on Advocacy, then scroll down to Promotional Events.

For September, we have two big events that may be of interest to you; Library Card Sign Up Month and Hispanic Heritage Month.

October brings even more events to keep you and your school busy.

Even if you don’t have time to celebrate and acknowledge all of these events, you can just pick what you can do and save the others for inspiration for next school year. And, please share these resources with your colleagues! Our goal is to always provide quality resources to make your life easier so you don’t have to reinvent the wheel! So, please, bookmark our page.

While your school year ebbs and flows, please think about our page and think of us as a place to find ideas to celebrate holidays, notable events, and historical days, weeks, and months to contribute to the richness of your students’ learning in your library.

Many thanks to the wonderful committee members of the School Library Event Promotion Committee and thank you to all of you, the school librarians, for the hard work you do each and every day for your students. We will have new resources for you each month to make it a little easier for you to celebrate and honor important events with your students every school year.
